How to compress an image to a target size

Short answer

Start by resizing oversized images, then export as JPG or WebP and lower quality until the file is under the target. Exact byte sizes cannot be guaranteed by browser encoders, so verify the output size.

Use dimensions before heavy quality loss

A huge photo can stay too large even at low quality. Reducing max width first usually preserves a cleaner-looking result than crushing quality alone.

Not reliably. Browser encoders expose quality settings, so the tool tries steps and reports whether the file is under the target.

What if the image is still too large?
